NAIDOC Week 2024
Celebrating with continuous fire

We have been hard at work over the last month bringing together a very special and memorable NAIDOC Week celebration where a sacred fire will burn continuously, from sunrise to sunset throughout the week at the Nowra Showground Wood Chop Arena. We'd love to invite you to the opening moment.

Are you available to volunteer for NAIDOC Week?
We are looking for 2 volunteers a day to be present for all or part of 2 shifts a day over the week.
You will keep the Fire Keepers company and attend to anything they need (like tea from the cafe or the nearby kitchen), and in rare cases provide transport.

Uncle Paul and Cate will be calling by daily throughout the week and our aim is to keep things simple and relaxed.

The FireKeepers shifts are:
6.45am - 12.15pm | Fire Lighting Demonstration daily 10.30 am
12.15 pm - 5.15pm 2pm | Fire Lighting Demonstration daily 2:00 pm.

We are looking for a special volunteer to step forward to assist with transport and general care of Uncle Noel Wellington, a proud Jerrinja Wandi Wandandian Elder and artist. This would involve driving him out and back to a location (TBA) for his storytelling around the Ancestor Bundoola in addition to Crookhaven Heads for a walk amongst his poles
Please let us know if you would like to be Uncle Noel's touchpoint for the festival.

You're Invited to a Whole Hearted Exchange

A FREE workshop with Karen Austen

August 11th, Wandandian Hall
9:45 am to 4:30 pm

Dear Volunteers,

At Yila Healing Trail, we cherish the incredible energy and dedication you bring to our community.

Your passion, commitment and willingness to embody our ethos contribute to the heartbeat of our mission and will create ongoing ripples of healing and connection throughout the Shoalhaven area.
We are thrilled to extend an invitation to you for a unique opportunity that promises to deepen your connection with yourself and with others to enrich your volunteering experience.  Of course, any opportunity to bring deeper connection will also bring new dimensions to your personal and professional life.

Introducing Wholehearted Exchange: A Paradigm Shift in Giving and Receiving

We understand that as a volunteer, you often find yourself at the forefront of giving, sometimes at the expense of your own well-being. This one-day program, facilitated by Karen Austen, is designed to support you in exploring and balancing the dynamics of giving and receiving, helping you to: Build deeper connections within your volunteer community, and fostering a sense of belonging and unity. Gain awareness of old patterns and motivations where you might feel compelled to take care of everyone else and learn how to shift these patterns.

Transform over-giving into a balanced and joyful dance of mutual exchange.

Clearly understand your own needs, confidently ask for what you want, and receive it graciously.
Apply these insights to enhance your volunteer work and positively impact all areas of your life.

Join us on August 11th, from 9:45 am to 4:30 pm, for a day of transformative practices through a radical inquiry into Giving and Receiving.

Together, we will engage in practical exercises that reveal deep insights into our behaviours and help rewire old patterns at the level of our nervous system.

Why Should You Attend?

From our conversations with many of you, we’ve heard your heartfelt stories of dedication and the challenges you face. Here’s what a few volunteers shared:

  • “I’ve volunteered many times and always felt the need to give everything. Learning to balance this would be life-changing.”
  • “I’ve struggled with over-giving to my family and community. This program could help me find that balance and still keep my passion for helping others.”
  • “I’ve experienced burnout from invisible labour in my volunteer roles. This program offers tools to manage that and enhance my well-being.”

Karen Austen, our facilitator, brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of human potential and communication. Her journey from severe PTSD to vitality through mind-body medicine offers a profound perspective that enriches her teaching.

We are excited to share this transformative experience with you. This program will not only support your volunteer efforts but will also resonate throughout your personal and professional life.

Don’t miss this opportunity to grow, connect, and rejuvenate.

Please book in soon as it is first-come-first-serve and our gift to you

Recap - Viking Festival

Thank you to our volunteers Takesa, Kim, Justine, Yolande, and Kristina for their invaluable assistance at the Viking Festival. What an incredible Cross-Cultural Day it was! This event was a heartwarming strengthening of the ties between the Wreck Bay Community, Sussex Inlet community, and the Ellmoos Family.

Gadhungal Marring also joined us to share their rich culture and showcase their beautiful Nawi (traditional canoe). This effort was part of our goal to assist in raising funds to ensure that a Nawi will be created and preserved in Sussex Inlet for all future flotillas and Viking Festivals, representing Cultural heritage.

Recap - Furoshiki Workshop

A huge thanks to Akiko and Wade for sharing their skills in folding Furoshiki. We hope you enjoyed the experience!
We are planning to ask all our volunteers to use their Furoshiki bags to identify them over the festival dates instead of wearing lanyards.
We would also like to share the full version of the Furoshiki notes with you as provided by Akiko and Wade.
Did any of you pay careful attention? If so would you be willing to share your skills with volunteers that weren’t able to join us for the workshop? We would love all volunteers to use this bag during the trail to identify them as volunteers… sure beats a lanyard!

If you feel you mastered the skill please let us know so we can refer new volunteers to you to learn how!

Enjoy photographer Jo Doyles gorgeous pictures of our day together in May

Volunteer with us

We would love for you to invite like-minded people to join our volunteer circle.
We are aiming for 80 volunteers and currently have 45.

Expect practical details to start arriving next week.

Please join our Volunteer Facebook Group to stay updated and share relevant posts.

Thank you so much for your participation.
We are looking forward to an amazing event.

Warmly
Cate and Yila Team.
